Cutaway View of the violin

Purfling--the inlaid wooden strip that runs around the edge of the violin top and back. It enhances the appearance like a picture frame. It also serves a function by acting as a binder.

Bridge--This holds the strings up. Each bridge is carved from maple to fit the particular violin. It serves the crucial function of transmitting the sound from the vibration of the strings to the body of the violin.

Bass bar--Tucked almost out of sight, under the G string, this bar serves a structural purpose of added strength, and also distributes vibration through the top of the instrument. Each luthier has his own idea about how to make a good bass bar. And that idea may be entirely incompatible with another luthier.

Sound post--Approximently under the E string, this post supports the tension of the strings in the lateral direction. It allows more movement on the G string side to distribute sound through the bass bar and throughout the body of the violin.
